German edition of Yegor Gaidar’s book ‘Collapse of an Empire /Der Untergang eines Imperiums’ presented in Cologne University
Presentation of the book ‘Der Untergang eines Imperiums’ by Yegor Gaidar, published by Springer Gabler, took place on 1 February 2016 in Cologne University.
Vera Ammer, translator of the German edition, launched the event, noting that this was her second Gaidar’s book published in Germany (the first was ‘State and Evolution’, 1995, Hanser Verlag). She told about her work on the Gaidar’s text and its complexity for a German reader.
Following discussion covered Russian economic reforms in 1990s. Eugeny Gontmakher, Deputy Director of the Institute of World Economy and International Relations at the Russian Academy of Sciences (IMEMO), explained to the audience historical, social and economic situation that the Soviet Union faced in the late 1980s, reasons that led to its collapse, and Gaidar’s market reforms in the beginning of 1990s.
Julius von Freytag-Loringhoven (Friedrich Naumann Stiftung), Florian Willershausen (Wirtschaftswoche magazine) and Prof. Dr. Jörg Schulte (Slavisches Institut der Universität zu Köln) contributed to the discussion. After discussion the audience was presented with a documentary ‘Yegor Gaidar. Collapse of an Empire’ by Alexey Pivovarov with German subtitles.
